Manure Processor and Fertiliser Biochar

Working with the client, Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Challoch Energy investigated the problems associated with the disposal of pig manure and looked at the production of biochar from the pyrolysis process to provide an economic solution. The project developed a roadmap for a proof-of-concept project covering six areas:

  1. A deep understanding of the technical process, its inputs and outputs, environmental impacts and the technical state of readiness;

  2. The alternatives to pyrolysis and biochar for pig manure, their inputs and costs and benefits;

  3. The legislative framework (EU and national levels), inputs to the formulation of the technical annexes of the Fertiliser Regulations and a major study on fertiliser components, including biochar;

  4. Development of a business case for technology, understand the best markets and opportunities and barriers to implementation;

  5. Route map for the proof-of-concept project in Northwest Europe;

  6. Development of sales channels for biochar.
